Documentary film, 2016, France, 23 min.
Director: Luca Chiari
Synopsis:
Between reality and fascination with the dreamed city, between nostalgia for the past and efforts to integrate the new culture, three young political refugees live their exile in Paris. The chasm separating external reality and inner universe can be bridged only with singing.
Director Statement:
Songlines started in November 2017 at Ateliers Varan. I had a few weeks to film and edit a short documentary in Paris and I decided to focus on the intimate side of exile.
Music, and in particular singing, seemed to be an efficient tool to evoke this feeling of precarious balance. Singing represents at the same time a way of learning a new language, integrating the culture of an adoptive country and keeping the most intimate connection with one's original culture.
