In a culinary school of a Velletri Correctional Facility, some student prisoners chefs are training with the hope of one day working in a renowned Michelin-starred restaurant, “The Garden of Delights,” a career destination where each of them projects their own hopes and desires.

Director statement
The prison environment has severe psychological consequences, linked to the difficulty of facing the past and the separation from life outside. Inmates often have to hide their vulnerability by wearing masks and adopting different roles. Theater becomes an effective tool, allowing the exploration of a different present and future, offering a temporary escape and the possibility to experiment with other lives. The playful nature of the theater workshop facilitates the emergence and sharing of deep themes, allowing for protected and unforced expression.
With this in mind, the visual and thematic approach of our documentary has been to explore how, through acting and the strong connection that food has with memory, each inmate who participated in the film allowed themselves to be transported, opening up to the personal story of their experiences. From a photographic perspective, we aimed to emphasize this delving into memories with voyeuristic shots at times or very close-up ones, as if immersing in the prepared food and the memories and lives of each protagonist. The kitchen environment itself becomes a protagonist, a place of gathering, memories, and mental escape, in anticipation of a real and metaphorical judgment that awaits each of them
