We interact with our loved ones more through tiny screens these days, but time moves so fast that those screens are becoming increasingly unfamiliar, cutting off our feelings. While it’s common in Chinese families to feel love but not express it in words, screens today only widen that gulf. During a visit home last year I discovered my father was still ill-acquainted with his mobile phone even after my repeated attempts to teach him the basics of various applications. At his age, he clearly lacks the instinctive familiarity that my generation has for electronics. The way those devices have penetrated every corner of life in modern society makes me nervous for my parents—a feeling I’m sure lots of children share. The film aims to use a minor issue to call attention to the elderly. For the last two years I’ve been trying to get my parents to start using smart phones, and by presenting that mental state in an exaggerated, animated form, I hope to share what I’ve experienced.
